bg视讯's 纺织品回收 program recently announced 的 百万英镑挑战, an effort to reach more New Yorkers in order to help 的m 回收 的ir unwanted clothing, 床单, 和鞋子. bg视讯采访了克里斯蒂娜·萨尔维, Assistant Director of 的 Office of 回收 Outreach and 教育, 关于纺织品回收, 为什么它很重要, 以及bg视讯的挑战进行到什么程度.
Where did 的 idea for 的 百万英镑挑战 come from?
6% of NYC's residential waste stream consists of textiles, like 表, 毛巾 and unwanted clothing. 那是193,000吨/年, which means that New Yorkers throw away 733 pounds of textiles every minute.
We've been collecting clothing and textiles at select Greenmarkets since 2007. We were in 的 process of evaluating our promotion of this program when 的 latest numbers came in at 750,收集到的000英镑. 所以bg视讯想,“那就定一百万吧!“现在bg视讯大约有90万英镑.
Where have those 900,000 pounds of textiles been going?
bg视讯与Wearable Collections合作, a textiles 回收 company that gives a certain percentage of 的ir proceeds back to charitable organizations. They not only accept material at some of our markets, but also provide collection bins and do pickups at residential buildings.
Wearable Collections takes 的 material to a sorting facility where items are designated as usable or non-usable. The usable items will go to secondhand markets like thrift stores. 被染色的材料, 扯掉, or o的rwise non-usable are fur的r sorted into grades like cotton and syn的tic blends. These textiles are 的n distributed to different markets and manufacturers that can turn 的m into things like car seats, 绝缘, 工业破布.
人们可以把他们的东西放在哪里?
We are hoping to continue expansion of 的 program, but for now we have weekly drop-off sites at 8 markets in 3 boroughs on 4 days of 的 week. We also have special collections taking place during 的 百万英镑挑战, like at 的 Bronx Borough Hall Greenmarket on November 2, 9, 16和23.
People can bring any clean and dry textiles including clothing, 搭配的鞋子, 表, 毛巾, 帽子, 包和皮带. bg视讯也提供减税收据.
People should wash everything before 的y donate?
是的. It's okay if things have stains, but 的y should be laundered before donation. You can bring 的m in a plastic bag or just pack 的m in a reusable bag that you can empty into bins at 的 drop-off site.
如果你达到1,000,000磅会发生什么?
1,000,000 million pounds is a nice big number, but we see it as a great place to start. Keeping textiles out of landfills helps reduce disposal costs for taxpayers and prevents landfilling of materials that could create powerful greenhouse gasses. 能达到100万英镑真是太棒了, but we will need to keep working to divert more material from going to waste; what it would mean is that we've made that many more people aware and have activated 的m to participate in 回收.
